The Design Process: Full Service Interior Design

FULL SERVICE INTERIOR DESIGN

There are tons of services being offered in the world of interior design right now–some from designers, some from decorators and some from furniture companies. It makes it really confusing to know who to hire to help with a project. And no one really defines what their special skills and services are so we thought we’d lay out some factors to consider when looking for a designer that can handle your specific needs.

E-DESIGN

E-Design is a very broad description of someone’s business. It might mean that they mock up what your room would look like with new pieces you can order yourself from online stores. It could be that they send options from trade-only vendors that they order for you but have you arrange yourself in your home. A lot of the services out there from designers that only do E-Design is a bit more on the DIY-side for the client.

When it comes to full-service design firms, there are a lot more resources available to make sure E-Design doesn’t leave the client overwhelmed or overburdened. The professional plans, renderings and logistics that go into an in-person renovation or refresh can absolutely happen on a virtual platform. The connections, programs and resources a certified interior designer has access to are able to help clients whether they’re near or far. For us personally, we also make sure that our virtual clients know they as important to us as those we can do site visits with. JEID Studio was created with the intention that the firm would be able to take the burden and confusion away from homeowners looking to make their homes more functional and beautiful — and that is meant for anyone nationwide!

IN-PERSON

If you’ve ever seen a video of a designer on a site visit or install day and thought, “that looks fun,” you’re absolutely right. It’s so fun, exhausting, exhilarating. Coordinating every aspect of a house going from bare bones to home-sweet-home has to be a complete passion of a designer because it’s so much. But also so rewarding.

Where E-Design is typically meant for room refreshes and projects with little-to-no structural work (let’s chat about your project though!!), In-Person design can look like restyling a room to completely starting from scratch on a home that hasn’t been built yet.

THE FULL SERVICE DESIGNER

Interior design can get confused for interior decorating — as if it’s just a knack you have or don’t have. But like any profession, there’s a reason why people are educated, trained and certified to handle the ins-and-outs of the design process. Maybe you love interior design but don’t have time or know-how to confidently execute a design project from beginning to end. Maybe you don’t have a design bone in your body–you cringe at the thought of having to mix patterns and appropriately scale furniture, let alone be the person sourcing, ordering, tracking, and coordinating said items. Or maybe you love design and simply need access to quality products! Great! We can cover your project from A -Z or we can simply assist where you need us.

THE ENTIRE PROCESS

FINISH CARPENTRY

We will work together to nail down the perfect finish carpentry package to not only work with the rest of your home, but to also fit the style of the space we are working on. Baseboards, doors, crown molding, custom built-ins, and more are all held in this phase of the project!

CABINETRY

Whether you are building a new home or remodeling an existing one, allow us to assist you in style, price point, vendors, and products. You aren’t going to believe how simple it is! Whether you order through our amazing partner SKIPP or use a local cabinet designer, we will work through colors, materials, styles, and placement for any cabinetry in the space.

PLUMBING

Who knew some toilets could be “prettier” than others? If your room has plumbing fixtures to be selected, we will make sure to identify the perfect finish and style to coordinate with all of the layers to come! Allow us to help select plumbing fixtures for your home that reflect your style and function best for you.

LIGHTING PLAN

Let’s get LIT! We will provide a lighting plan that includes the location, size, install height, and bulb list to ensure you are set up to have the perfect amount of layered light for your space. This phase is so fun and makes SUCH a big impact.

FLOORING

Whether you want bold and daring or soft and subtle, we would love to help create a flow of materials for your home. We will provide a detailed list calling out the flooring, backsplash, or shower materials along with the placement of each.

FURNITURE PLAN

You can put together an outfit starting with shoes and make your way up, or start with your top and make your way down. The same rules apply to designing your home as long as this concept is implemented early enough. You can let walls dictate your furniture or let your furniture dictate your walls. We would love to develop a furniture plan for your home that functions perfectly for how you live.

WALLS

Wallpaper is BACK y’all! I know, I know… You just took it down. Whether you use paper, paint, or custom ceiling details, we will record and communicate any specifics necessary for you or your contractors to pull off the plan with confidence.

FURNITURE SELECTION

We may be biased, but this is one of the best parts. We would love to fill your home with furniture that fits your lifestyle, functions for your family, and is scaled properly for each room.

FINISHING TOUCHES

Congratulations, you are on to the final touches! Artwork, lamps, window coverings, decor, and all things layering. A lot of people are tempted to skip this step, but it is the extra layer that really takes your space to the next level. It makes your house a home!

JUST THE STARTING POINT

That’s a lot right? And it’s just the tip of the iceberg. Working with a full-service firm doesn’t mean you have to have a giant project, it means that you have all of the resources you could ever want, no matter the size of your project. It means that if you just need furniture, you have a knowledgeable team that knows just the pieces you need. It means that if you need a completely gutted remodel, the designers know what to do. It’s putting yourself in the best situation you can hope for and have the flexibility to change directions without having to change designers.
