The showroom in Waukee

Furniture, rugs, lighting and art, out on the floor and for sale. Most of it goes home the same day. Designers are here too, for the rooms that need more than one piece.

Part shop, part working studio

Two things happen in this building.

The first is retail. The furniture, rugs, lighting, art and decor on the floor are for sale, and most of it leaves with the person who bought it. No appointment, no project, no design fee. If you want the chair, take the chair.

The second is the design practice. Fifteen of us work here (designers, drafters, sales and operations) and the big decisions on our full-service projects get made in this room. Clients sit at these tables and see the plan for their house before it gets built.

You can come in for either one. Most people start with the first.

What is on the floor

We buy for the floor the way we buy for a house. If we would not put it in a client’s room, it does not come in.

Furniture

Sofas, sectionals, chairs, ottomans, dining tables, dining chairs, beds, nightstands, dressers, consoles, coffee tables and side tables. Sit in it before you decide. That is most of the reason the floor exists.

Rugs, lighting and art

Rugs rolled out, lamps lit, art and mirrors on the walls. These are the pieces that decide whether a room reads finished, and they are the hardest ones to judge from a photograph.

The finishing layer

Pillows, throws, vases, books, objects and the decor that fills a shelf without making it look staged. It is the last layer, and the one people underestimate.

The floor is the start, not the limit

What is out on the floor is a fraction of what we can order.

A lot of what we specify can be made rather than picked: the same chair in the size your room needs, in a fabric that will survive a dog, with a leg and a finish you chose. So if the shape is right and the fabric is wrong, do not write it off. That is a question with an answer.

We know how these pieces are built, which is the part you cannot look up. We place the order, receive it, check it, deliver it, and if it turns up damaged we handle the claim. You do not chase a manufacturer.

Come with a shopping list, or come with a problem

You do not need a whole house, or a whole project, to work with us. Here is the honest map.

I just want to shop.

Then shop. The floor is open whenever we are, and no appointment is needed. Buy what you like and take it with you, or we will order it if the one you want is a different size or fabric.

I need one specific piece.

Bring the measurements and a photograph of what is already in the room. Scale is easy to get wrong and expensive to undo, and it is a much better conversation to have before the piece is ordered.

I need help pulling a whole room together.

That is Design Advisory. A designer works through the room with you, and you can do it here at the showroom or over video, whichever suits you. There are three packages, and the page sets out what is in each.

The room is nearly there. It just does not feel finished.

That is Styled at Home. You meet a stylist here first, we curate the finishing pieces for your house, then we bring them to you and style the rooms. You live with it for up to a week and keep only what you want. We take the rest back. There is a reservation deposit to hold the styling day, and it goes toward what you keep.

I am building.

Then the earlier we are in, the more we can do. The decisions that cost the most are made earliest, long before there is anything to furnish.

New construction

I am remodeling an older house.

Same answer, different constraints. What is already there decides a lot, and the walk-through is where that gets worked out.

Remodel

Bring the room you are stuck on

This is the part people do not believe. You can walk in without knowing what you want.

Worth bringing

  • A few photographs of the room, including the corner you do not like
  • Rough measurements, plus ceiling height and where the windows are
  • Anything you are keeping
  • Pictures of things you liked, wherever you found them
  • The problem, in your own words

You do not need

  • A Pinterest board
  • A style you can name
  • A budget worked out to the dollar
  • A reason you dislike your current sofa

“What is wrong with this room” has an answer, and it is usually one you can act on that week.

There is usually something on

The floor is not the only reason to come. We run workshops, seasonal markets and Studio Sessions, a free evening where you bring one room you have been stuck on, sit down with a pair of our designers for fifteen minutes, and leave with a marked-up plan in your hand. It runs four times a year, and guests apply rather than book.

Dates go out by email before they go anywhere else. Ask us to put you on the list while you are in.
